Vanquish Review and Other Ramblings 2
This year, there are some people that decide to purchase Fallout: New Vegas, The Force Unleashed II, or Fable III without the funds to spend on another game. Though, these choices are a mistake. I feel sorry for those people. The game that deserves their money is Vanquish. Created by Platinum games, Vanquish is obviously made by developers who have always done us good. From beginning to end, Vanquish delivers on all fronts. Story, dialog, gameplay, graphics, and more. I mean, I could go on and on, but check out this video I found on YouTube:
And the awesome dialog:
The game is worth the purchase. I could see myself going through it multiple times and finding all the little secrets. There are little hidden statues to find in every level.
Since I’m waiting on GameFly to send me games, I’ve been playing some older titles I’ve never gone through. Some of these games I’ve just acquired through family or friends because they know my love for games but just wanted to off-load them somewhere. I played Onimusha 3 back when it was released and somewhat enjoyed it. But I typically hate playing a series without starting from the first. So, this week I tried out Onimusha: Warlords. It’s decent, but does not stand the test of time. It uses pre-rendered backgrounds and the old-school Resident Evil style ‘axis’ character controlling and only one attack button. It pushed me away. I might just Wiki the story and try two or maybe just go back to three.
Then I tried Devil May Cry. It’s still a little too simple for me; I just kept on going through the game with no real challenge, but I assume they get better. Again, I may just Wiki and move on. I tried this with Metal Gear Solid. The first PSOne title is okay, but gets a little boring. I understand the story pulls people in, but it either needs to be and awesome story or have amazing gameplay. The thing is, I want to play the new Raiden title and even Peace Walker on PSP looks great. I just feel I’d be doing my self a disservice without getting invested into the characters and lore. I just remember back in the day trying out MGS thinking it was rather boring, then playing WinBack on the N65 and getting blown away. What a great game.
My love for Front Mission Evolved got me itching for some mech combat, so I jumped back into Armored Core 4. The problem with AC4 is that levels may take a minute or two to complete – it’s all about just doing it awesome and earning credits to customize your mech. I like FME’s longer mission structure. The first Lost Planet could also be seen as a mech game. The first time I played it I didn’t use the mechs much and didn’t enjoy it. Second time around I made sure to make use of any mech around and it became rather enjoyable meta game within a great game.
The second Lost Planet is awesome as well, but I prefer the mech-focused character-driven campaign of the first. Inafune even said he wasn’t into the second LP’s style, but all work was done by his partner Takeuchi who is now taking his place. I still have faith in Takeuchi.
Anyway, I guess I went off a bit.
