Top Three PS2 Games – PlayStation Blog Asks Devs 1
It’s the 10 year anniversary for the PS2. A console that took me a couple years to purchase due to lack of any good games at launch, but got better as time went on. Still, my Dreamcast and XBox library are bigger than the PS2 library (let’s not forget the awesome PC gaming at that time). To me, the PS2 could wait. But, that doesn’t mean there weren’t any good games on it.
The Sony blog asked developers to name their top three favorite PS2 games. Here’s the link. Kudos for getting primary XBox devs like CliffyB. The top games mentioned are Ico, GTA3, Shadow of the Colossus, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, God of War, Okami, and Katamari Damacy. All good choices, though, we know I can’t get into the GTA games.
The problem though is that some developers were picking games that are multiplatform. Yeah, maybe that’s how you experienced it, but it’s not representing the console. For instance, The Thing. Great, great game, but vastly superior on XBox/PC. And RE4 – that is a GameCube staple. Then we get to Rey Gutierrez
Senior Social Media Specialist for PlayStation who says in regards to Rez, “Take that, Dreamcast!”. What the fuck is this supposed to mean? Does this douche need to be pommeled? The Dreamcast is a God not to be spoken down upon, and it’s such an odd statement considering his reference is to Rez starting as a Dreamcast title! What the hell, man!
And this from the comments is priceless!

I am sorry, but I couldn’t care less what the plebeian western developers liked best, I’d much rather hear which games were the favorites of those who actually made the PS2 the most amazing console to date, the Japanese developers.Sid Shuman | October 27th, 2010 at 11:26 am
It’s the North American 10-year anniversary (Japan’s was last year), but we did reach out to a number of names you’d know in Japanese development. Unfortunately, many folks are in crunch time so not everyone could make it in our tight turnaround time — we’ll be adding any latecomers though!
Way to let your self-elitism back fire on you!
My top three:
1. Syphon Filter: Omega Strain
Lost planet 2 comes closest to matching the co-op multiplay in Omega Strain. The co-op is brilliant and is still miles better than what other games claim are ‘co-op’ modes. Four players at once, sometimes having to traverse opposite ends of a level to meet an end-goal. A new version with updated controls would be great. The original relies on auto-aim rather than manual aim and old-school 3rd person movement. In-depth customization and so many unlocks!
2. Gradius V
The best representation of a modern-gen SHMUP. Very challenging and beautiful with great music! The story is nothing to scoff at too.
3. God of War
A great take on brawlers. The series has gone a little stale (still have hope for the new PSP title) but it is timeless, tight, gameplay.
Runners-up would be Odin Sphere, Shinobi, and R-Type Final.
